Expanding Ban the Box

Every day, many Americans are denied the opportunity to compete for quality jobs that can prove stability and security for their families - all because of a prior history of incarceration or convictions. This form of employment discrimination has a disproportionate impact on people of color, who are more likely to be arrested and incarcerated due to racial disparities in the justice system.

For foundations seeking better results and inclusion, adopting (or deepening a commitment to fair chance hiring could be an important step to unlocking untapped potential. During this session participants will hear perspectives from advocates and HR professionals who have participated in the Ban the Box Philanthropy Challenge - an effort to promote fair chance hiring in philanthropy.  The speakers will review the key steps from the forthcoming Fair-Chance Hiring Toolkit: A Step-By-Step Guide for Foundations.

Assessing Inclusion within your Organization/Foundation

Organizational Culture is a vital component of ensuring a productive work environment in any workplace. As HR practitioners, we have the opportunity to shape an inclusive and equitable organizational culture. How can you determine the extent to which your organization values diversity, equity, and inclusion in theory and in practice? Using an objective assessment tool, participants will evaluate the climate within their foundation as it relates to DEI and identify opportunities for improvement.

Leading Change: The Role of HR

In her book, The Key to Cultural Transformation, Frances Hesselbein presents this truth — "Culture does not change because we desire to change it. Culture changes when the organization is transformed; the culture reflects the realities of people working together every day." Transforming an organizational culture requires leaders with the ability to implement new practices that reflect the authenticity of their employees. Having already learned to identify potential barriers to inclusion, participants will discuss the roles which HR professionals can play in managing change within their foundations while learning tips for leading this change.

5:30 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.

Moving to Action

We know the intention of every attendee is to bring home new strategies to implement, and this activity will provide tools to do just that.  This activity will provide a reminder of the meaningful lessons learned thought the course of the day.
